The Small World Coffee montage was Directed and Photographed by Gerardo Puglia and edited by his longtime partner William Tadler who has edited most of Gerardo’s films. “Bill has a profound understanding of my footage, and turns it into a piece of work with insight and intelligence”. The time-lapse portion of the small world coffee montage was filmed in 35mm. with a 1939 Eyemo camera made by Bell and Howell.
Gerardo, a native of Cardigan, Wales, began his career at the age of 16, where he gained a reputation for innovative documentaries. He later went on to work as a Director of Photography for a myriad of film and television entities, including the BBC, PBS, CBS, National Geographic, RAI (Italian Television), Imagine Entertainment, and Warner Brothers, as well as numerous documentaries, independent films and television commercials. He is an internationally renowned Director / Cinematographer. Gerardo has been the recipient of many prestigious awards for excellence, including two Emmys, a Peabody, and two qualified entries for the Academy Award (The Oscar).
Gerardo’s approach has been described as being akin to the French “camera-style”, in which there is no script or restrictive shooting schedule to dictate what the camera sees, and the resulting work becomes a form of innocence, of images found by the camera.
Gerardo has also been a regular of small world coffee for many years, and has been ordering a “skim forte and a rugleach” almost every morning, at least when he is in town and not off shooting film somewhere. He also participated as a judge in the 2009 small world coffee annual Cap-Off competition.
